Dr. Charles John Bhaskar T. — Scientist, Innovator, and Global Problem Solver — has spent over four decades turning science into real-world solutions. His last two decades were devoted especially to marine biotechnology, in research, development, training, and mentoring thousands of students. Recognized internationally as a Global Solver with IdeaConnection (Canada), he has addressed complex challenges spanning biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and environmental sustainability.
From Industry to Innovation
Director’s Profile — A Life Dedicated to Science and Marine Biotechnology
Dr. Charles began his journey as Production Officer at Malladi Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, Ranipet, later serving as Scientist at Malladi Research Center, Chennai. His early experience in fermentation and process optimization laid the foundation for his pioneering work with microbial systems.
Pioneer of Probiotics in Aquaculture
As Consultant and R&D Head to Poseidon Aquaculture (Chennai) and Sri Mahalakshmi Enterprises (Tiruchirapalli), he developed and was instrumental in the commercialization of India’s first microbial consortium integrating Thiobacillus with other beneficial bacteria—ushering in a new era of eco-friendly aquaculture and veterinary probiotics. There was no prior use of Thiobacillus spp. in aquaculture before. Several other aquaculture products were also developed and commercialized.
Exploring Marine Frontiers
His research expanded into nutraceuticals from seaweeds, bioluminescence, and marine-derived enzymes—areas where he continues to mentor young innovators and translate discoveries into commercial products and select publications.
Advisor, Mentor, Visionary
A Consultant to the Government of Gujarat for the Marine Biotechnology Park and a Task Force Member of the Kerala State Science & Technology Mission, Dr. Bhaskar also serves as a resource person for universities and institutions including IIT Madras, VIT Vellore, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Vels Institute of Science and Technology, Veltech University, and others—guiding students to blend scientific integrity with social purpose. He has personally mentored hundreds of students into their professional journeys.
Recognitions and Global Impact
Winner of multiple IdeaConnection and InnoCentive innovation awards, and finalist in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation India Energy Challenge and Global Energy Storage Challenge (London), his work reflects a lifelong pursuit of purposeful innovation. The companies for whom his IP was transferred include Syngenta Biotechnologies, Syngenta (a Global Agriculture Company), and Wrigley’s Chewing Gum, among others.
